Description of works
RJT Excavations conducted the main earthworks for the South Withernsea coastal defence works, which were located off Holmpton Road, South Withernsea.
The works stretched for 700m and were a continuation of previously completed coastal defence works, heading due south along the eastern coast line of South Withernsea.
Scope of work
- Installation of surface water management measures to comply with the site-specific PPP
- Topsoil strip and stockpile on site 12,000 m3
- Reprofiling of existing clay cliff 20,000 m3
- Cut-and-fill with site-won material to form designed final new embankment prior to placement of coastal defence wall: 20,000 m3
- Placing of geotextiles as per contract specification prior to placement of coastal defence wall
- Importing, stockpiling, and placement of 80,000 t of imported rock armour – all delivered by barge and deposited offshore during high tide, then uplifted and transported to work areas during low tide
- 90,000 t broken down into 20,000 t secondary armour 1-5t and 70,000 t of 8-10 armour with individual weights of up to 15 t
- As-built testing and surveys as per contract specification to ensure packing density of placed armour

- Resource planning to meet requirements of barge deliveries

- Ground conditions and suitability of site-won materials for use as fill
