Description of works

RJT Excavations Ltd were contracted by Luddon Construction Ltd to carry out the main earthworks and associated drainage for the development of a new substation adjacent to the existing substation at Coalburn North.

Works included within RJT Excavations scope of works:

  • Topsoil strip and stockpile on site – 27,100m3.
  • Installation of pre-earthworks ditches and drainage.
  • Bulk excavation cut and fill to design line and level, in line with project specification – 120,000m3.
  • Forming of SUDS ponds.
  • Compaction and testing in line with project specification.
  • Laying Geotextile separating layer.
  • Importing of aggregates and spread across site – 11,500m3.
  • 1200m of associated drainage.
  • Assist in the construction of a new culvert.

  • Services and utilities.
  • Ground conditions and suitability of site won materials for use as upfill.
  • Weather conditions.
  • Environmental constraints – Surface water management.
  • Follow-on contractors with tight programme timescales.

  • Achieving handover of platform before key date.
  • Positive relationship with main contractor and site team.
  • Forward planning and identification of potential risks to the project and timescales.
